DESCRIPTION:
PW mvt only - Waltham, Crystal Plate serial #6, 17J, 4S, HC model mvt with conversion style dial with pendant at 12 allowing proper orientation within OF case, white enamel dial without seconds-register, lever escapement, originally with free-sprung balance but presently with a replacement balance wheel included with lot, jeweled barrel arbor, gold train, back plate and balance cock constructed from polished transparent rock crystal, gilt damascene dial plate, s#6. The Waltham Crystal Plate watches are among the most beautiful and iconic pieces in American horology, and these movements have a strikingly unique appearance with red ruby jewels friction set into transparent plates giving the illusion of their floating in mid-air. In total it is believed that approximately 75 examples of the 4 size crystal plate movement were produced. The present example is notable for its particularly low serial number and its earlier style plate design that was likely only used among the first 20 or fewer examples of 4 size Crystal Plate production. This movement is currently in need of skilled restoration due to damage to its balance cock and loss of its original balance assembly, yet remains a very worthwhile project.
